This is the name of the place that used to be the capital of Goa. It is 10km upstream from Panjim. In the mid 17th century it was hit by the bubonic plague and several other epidemics and also a decline in trade. Eventually the capital moved to Panjim and Old Goa became a ghost town. Over time the houses were plundered for bricks and other building materials to help build Panjim. However the grandest buildings were preserved and are now part of a world heritage site.
