I ask our fixer if he can arrange a taxi to take us to Mordor. He tells me the trip to middle earth is quite expensive and people don’t usually come back. But if we want to go to Mandore, which is 9km away, he knows someone who has a brand new tuck tuck who will drive us there and back and wait for 2 hours while we look round.
But what is Mandore?
Mandore, about 9 km from Jodhpur, was the ancient capital of Marwar before Jodhpur was founded. It features the Mandore Gardens, known for their striking cenotaphs (chhatris) of Marwar rulers, a temple-like memorial to Maharaja Ajit Singh, and the Hall of Heroes with carved figures of local deities and warriors. The site also includes ruins of the old fort and lush gardens inhabited by langurs.
