Anyone who visits The Golden Temple has an option to go and visit the food hall, where you can get a free veggie thali. Three types of curry, rice and a chapatti. And for people like me who bolt food down at pace, there was seconds. I’m not sure what I was expecting but there weren’t many westerners at the Golden Temple when we were there and we were easily singled out as people who needed direction. Where to stand, where to sit, where to eat. Strangely, we were also singled out as westerners or perhaps non-Sikhs so we had to eat on our own. As we left we saw the scale of volunteers, peeling potatoes and shelling peas. It was a large operation.
